Lata Mangeshkar won't celebrate 87th birthday, says 'jo shahid hue hai unki yaad karo kurbani'

Mumbai:MMNN:28 Sept. 2015
Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar won't celebrate her 87th birthday today (Wednesday) as 18 Indian soldiers recently died "so brutally in Uri". She is saddened by the darkness all around, including the deteriorating relations with Pakistan. But she hopes they stay happy and live in peace.
The September 18 terror attack left 18 Indian soldiers dead at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir. So, this year Lata won't celebrate her birthday. "Not when our soldiers have died so brutally in Uri. My sincere request to my well-wishers, please don't waste money buying me flowers. Instead send money to the bereaved family of martyrs. Jo shaheed huey hain unki zaraa yaad karo qurbani," she said.
There is hatred everywhere, especially between India and the neighbours. What is her message to her fans? Lata said: "Everything has changed. Human beings and even the climate is now unpredictable. Extreme weather conditions play havoc with our lives. I am deeply saddened to see children suffer in natural calamities and during war."
So what according to her, is the solution to the current crisis in mankind's existence?
"I don't know if I am qualified to comment on such matters. But yes, I do wonder why nations don't keep their own house in order instead of creating havoc in others' domain. Why hurl bombs at nations? Hatred kills. Why not work on making our own country beautiful?"
She cites the example of Switzerland as an idyllic state of existence.
"Switzerland is considered the most peaceful country in the world. Why? Because they've concentrated on making their own country better and more developed and they do not look at other countries to harm them. We never hear of violence perpetrated by the Swiss."
Her message to her fans in Pakistan?
"Woh khush rahen shanti se rahen (I hope they stay happy and stay in peace). Aur humen bhi khushi aur shanti se rehne den (And let us also live in peace and be happy). I know the people there are just like us. They want peace. Only some elements don't want peace."
On a more cheerful note, Lata Mangeshkar has been conferred West Bengal's highest civilian honour - the Banga Bibhushan. And Lata, who has received India's highest civilian honour the Bharat Ratna, is ecstatic.
"My connection with Bengal is karmic. I've sung numerous Bangla songs including Durga Pooja songs and Rabindra Sangeet, the two most popular genres of singing in Bengal. I hold my visits to Kolkata very close to my heart. Do you know, Bengal is where I've performed the maximum live concerts in India," said Lata, recalling with pleasure the times when she recorded Bangla songs for the two Bangla maestros Salil Chowdhury and Hemant Kumar.
"Hemant da's songs were sweet and transparent, like the man himself. His tunes were very melodious. Salil da used to record really intricate layered Bangla songs with me and then he would record the same song with me in Hindi. For example, 'O sajna barkha bahaar aayee' ('Parakh'), 'Na jiya laage na('Anand') and 'Niss din niss din' ('Annadata') were all Bengali songs first."
Lata's brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar also recorded Bangla songs with her.
"Hridaynath converted some of his famous Marathi numbers into Bangla," she revealed.
She recalls every visit to Kolkata with pleasure. "I love the food there, and the saris. But most of all, I love the language. It is so sweet. I am honoured to get their award.
The fact that West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamta Bannerjee will take the time to personally come to Mumbai to give me the award makes it all the more special. I couldn't have hoped for a better birthday gift."
What do awards mean to the Nightingale at this stage of her career?
"Oh, they mean a lot! It's never too late for recognition and praise. When I received the Bharat Ratna in 2001, all my friends said there is nothing more to achieve. But I am still learning. I still feel like a student. Every word of praise whether it comes from the government or a listener who appreciates my songs, is equally important."

Deepika Padukone is world's 10th highest paid actress, beats Priyanka Chopra to Forbes list

New Delhi:MMNN:24 Aug. 2015
Deepika Padukone is not just India's top-paid actress, she is also among the top 10 highest-paid actresses in the world, according to Forbes. The actress is the only Indian on the list with earnings of $10 million. The list is headlined by Jennifer Lawrence, with total earnings of $46 million.
The one Bollywood star we expected to see on the list was Priyanka Chopra. She is the lead star of ABC's Quantico and will be soon making her Hollywood debut with Dwayne Johnson-starrer Baywatch. However, Priyanka failed to make it to the top 10. Media has been abuzz with a rivalry between Priyanka and Deepika given the fact that both the actresses will be seen making her Hollywood debuts soon. Deepika will be seen in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel.
Meanwhile, Deepika is in august company, other than Jennifer, Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron and Friends star Jennifer Anniston are also on the top 10 list. The 30-year-old Bajirao Mastani actress is described by Forbes as having "scored box office gold." The magazine also mentions her Bollywood movies such as Bajirao Mastani and Piku.
While she earns less than her Hollywood counterparts for roles, Deepika "compensates with over a dozen lucrative endorsements", which "have helped her hedge against a deep pay gap in Bollywood".
Forbes said the Bangalore-bred Deepika, who made her Bollywood film debut in 2007 with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om, has "since starred in several films that have crossed the $150 million or 100 crore mark "a barometer for box office success in India". Deepika "has also become something of a style icon" launching her own label for an Indian online shopping site.
Making her Hollywood debut along Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel, she will be seen in 2017 in xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Noting the gender pay gap in the Indian movie industry, "a discrepancy not uncommon in Hollywood" also, Forbes said though a top Indian male star might earn close to $5 million a movie, prominent Indian actresses rarely clear $1 million a film.
Bringing up the front of the list is Jennifer Lawrence, who topped Forbes magazine list of the world's highest-paid actress for the second straight year, earning some $46 million.
Lawrence, 26, took the top spot largely through a slice of the profits from the final movie in the Hunger Games franchise, as well as a big upfront fee for her forthcoming space adventure movie, Passengers, Forbes said.
However, like Deepika, Lawrence's estimated payday was likely well below that for Hollywood's leading men, Forbes said, despite the actress sparking a debate about the gender pay gap last year. She declared she was "finished being adorable" when it came to negotiating better deals for herself. Lawrence's 2016 earnings dropped 11.5 percent from her 2015 total of $52 million.
Forbes will release its list of the world's highest-paid actors on Thursday. Last year Robert Downey Jr. topped the list with an estimated $80 million. Neither, however, came close to pop star Taylor Swift, who was named the top-earning celebrity of 2016 earlier this year, pulling in an estimated $170 million from record sales and her world tour.
Melissa McCarthy took home $33 million in earnings, up $10 million from 2015 in part from her payday for the controversial female reboot of Ghostbusters. It was the biggest annual paycheck to date for the star of television comedy, Mike and Molly. McCarthy, 45, also launched a clothing line for sizes 4 to 28 after becoming frustrated at the outfits available for larger women.
Scarlett Johansson of Captain America: Civil War was third at $25 million, down nearly 30 percent from 2015. Together, the world's 10 highest-paid actresses tallied a combined $205 million between June 1, 2015 and June 1, 2016, before management fees and taxes, Forbes said.
The estimates include earnings from movies, TV and endorsements from cosmetic and other companies. The rest of the top 10 of this year's highest-paid actresses are Jennifer Aniston ($21 million), Fan Bingbing ($17 million), Charlize Theron ($16.5 million), Amy Adams ($13.5 million), Julia Roberts ($12 million), Mila Kunis ($11 million) and Deepika Padukone ($10 million).

Pratyusha Banerjee's Body Sent For Post-Mortem, Cops Question Boyfriend

New Delhi:MMNN:2 April 2016
Actress Pratyusha Banerjee, whose death at the age of 24 is being investigated as a possible suicide, was taken to Mumbai's Kokilaben Ambani Hospital on Friday by her boyfriend Rahul Raj, sources say. Pratyusha, best-known for playing the lead character of Anandi on TV show Balika Vadhu, allegedly hanged herself at home and was declared dead at the hospital. Her body has now been sent to Mumbai's Sidharth Hospital for a post-mortem.
Rahul Raj, who owns a production house, has been in touch with the police and has given them a statement.
On Friday, Mumbai Police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni said they had received a report on the actress' death from Kokilaben Ambani Hospital and that the police will now be investigating.
BJP leader Shazia Ilmi asked for a 'complete probe' into the matter and stressed on the need for women to be emotionally strong. "It's really unfortunate that a young, successful actress who was so popular had to take this step. There should be a complete probe and all evidence should be taken to make sure that it was a case of suicide. There should be a conversation on the subject. If she is blaming her boyfriend, they should know how to treat their women. How should one person treat the other. Emotional violence is one of the worst things to happen. Women have to be more stronger emotionally, not just financially. Men must be more responsible towards their partner so nobody is forced to take a step as grievious as this," Ms Ilmi told.
Activist Abha Singh linked Pratyusha's suicide to the larger issue of the breakdown of the nuclear family and also called for the need to decriminalise article 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "It is very tragic that a young girl, auccessful TV artiste who was famous as Balika Vadhu committed suicide. As on date, article 309 of the IPC is an offence which entails an imprisonment of upto one year. Keeping this case in kind, We should put pressure on Parliament to decriminalise 309 of the IPC otherwise a star who requires help does not say 'I am suffering from depression' because suicide is a state of mental depression. In the glamour world and otherwise, depression is on the rise because of the disengagement of the family breakdown of nuclear family," Ms Singh told ANI.
Pratyusha's death has sent shockwaves through Bollywood. TV actress Kamya Punjabi, with whom she featured on Bigg Boss, told DNA , "I am not in the right frame of mind."
Actress Surekha Sikri, who played 'Dadisa' to Pratyusha's character in Balika Vadhu, told IANS: "I am absolutely shocked. I knew her, she was very sweet. She was a sensitive person, she must have taken something to heart and must have got really emotional." The actress allegedly killed herself over difficulties in her personal life.
Tanuj Garg, former CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, disclosed on Twitter her plans to marry her boyfriend Rahul Raj.
Actor Eijaz Khan, a close friend of Pratyusha's, has alleged that she has been murdered.
"My friend is no more. I know that what happened was very wrong. But this is not a case of suicide. She was not so weak. It seems to be a case of planned murder," Mr Khan told.
TV actress Dolly Bindra, who knew Pratyusha from her Bigg Boss days, told ANI she was 'too strong to commit suicice.'
The actress was earlier dating businessman named Makrand Malhotra, with whom she had a bitter break-up and against whom she had lodged a complaint for abusive behaviour. In January this year, Pratyusha had alleged that she was molested by some men dressed as police personnel.
Pratyusha Banerjee played Anandi on Balika Vadhu from 2010 to 2013. She was also a contestant on reality shows Bigg Boss and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and appeared on several other shows like Sasural Simar Ka.

Arjun Kapoor Praises Priyanka, Deepika Over Their Achievements In Hollywood

MUMBAI:MMNN:11 Feb. 2016
Bollywood star Arjun Kapoor says actors need to be very secure in their career before taking a leap to Hollywood as it is difficult to start from the scratch.
Arjun's co-stars, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, are now venturing into Hollywood projects.
While the Mary Kom (2014) actress was part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)-drama series Quantico, the Piku (2015) star will be seen opposite Vin Diesel in xXx.
The 2 States(2014) actor says it is amazing what Priyanka has achieved and is confident Deepika will do great too.
"If you are given the opportunity to go out there and do a work, you should do it because you are representing your country and your skills. It is amazing what Priyanka has achieved and I am sure Deepika will do equally well. She is such a talented personality and has only gotten better with time," Arjun said in an interview.
The actor believes it takes tremendous confidence to uproot oneself from the current industry and start working in another.
"They have achieved a lot here to have that comfort and confidence to pick themselves up from here, go there, and start from scratch. It's not everybody's cup of tea. You have to be in a very secure place in your life and career to take that opportunity," he said.
Several Indian actors like Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have worked in Hollywood films in the past. Arjun believes it is very "emotional" to work in the west while representing the country and hence should be done whole-heartedly.
"Priyanka has achieved so much here, she has picked her bag and gone there and has invested so much time in her work, so you cannot do it half-heartedly. It is very emotional to go there as an Indian actor in a main lead. You need to be very focused to do it. You can't just do it because everybody is doing it. Even if I did a Hollywood film someday, I would want to put my best foot forward..."

Happy Birthday Urmila Matondkar! You won our hearts from 'Rangeela' to 'Ek Hasina Thi'

New Delhi:MMNN:4 Feb. 2016
Urmila Matondkar is not an easy person to know, and I've 'known' her for 20 years.
Not a single visit to Mumbai would be complete without a visit and a lavish meal at her place. Her homes, the first one and later the larger more swanky one, were warm and well-appointed. Her parents would be there to chat with me, and then over a hearty meal Urmila and I would laugh and bitch about everyone and anyone, uncensored. She's also a great mimic and does amazing takeoffs on everyone from Asha Bhosle to Shabana Azmi.
Azmi, who has worked with Urmila when the latter was still a child in Masoom and Bhavna, says Urmila was a born actress.
There was plenty of time at the dinner table for gabbing sessions. The meals would last quite a while. Because, boy oh boy, Urmila really tucked in, and was not the least apologetic about it. She would warn me that she takes time to eat and then proceed to demolish all the dishes with her amazing appetite.
So the biggest mystery about Urmila, among the many mysteries that qualified her life, is this: where did all that rich food go? Certainly not to her hour-glass figure. To top it all, Urmila claimed she never went to the gym, and that's was hard to believe. But another voracious eater Priyanka Chopra also claimed the same. So it's hard to decide what to believe, the slim figures or the emptied out plates.
Urmila is great fun to be with. Our abiding rapport began when Ram Gopal Varma introduced me to her over the phone during one of my visits to Mumbai. Urmila immediately invited me home for lunch. Since then, our mutual warmth and love grew to include her family and mine into our circle of camaraderie.
Coincidentally, I've been in Mumbai on several of her birthdays. I've seen the entire building where she lives lined up with bouquets from friends, fans and producers. Now the bouquets are no longer there, as Urmila is no longer the celluloid diva she used to be. But the aura remains. No fan, no journalist would ever dare to misbehave with her. She was a Queen, and she remains one.
I remember her walking into Kamal Haasan's premiere of Abhay in a sensuous slit dress and furs. All the shutterbugs who were clicking Raveena Tandon ran to click Urmila. She was a head-turner. She still is, but the roles have dried up. The queue of directors eager to narrate their scripts to her is no more to be seen at her doorstep. The roles may not return, nor would she return to them.
Her days of glory, while they lasted, were much talked about. There was Rangeela, Ram Gopal Varma's only romantic film; Satya, where in spite of Manoj Bajpai, she held her own, especially during that lilting Lata Mangeshkar melody Gila gila paani which was cut out of the film; Kaun, where her horror act was chilling; Pinjar, which was a masterly adaptation of Amrita Pritam's novel about a rape victim during the Partition, and many more revered films.
Perhaps her transformation from typical Bollywood heroine to a more meaty actress was marked by films such as Ek Haseena Thi, where she played hero to Saif Ali Khan's villain; Pyar Tune Kya Kiya, where she was heart-breakingly poignant as a victim of unrequited love; Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, which saw her as a daughter trying to cope with a father suffering from Alzeihmer's, and Khubsoorat, where she played the Plain Jane who transforms into, well, Urmila Matondkar.
Today Urmila is on her own. I don't know of any man in her life, and we never spoke about it. Though she was a great pal, there was always a line which no one was allowed to cross. Happy birthday, Urmila. You are very special.

Sooraj Pancholi made false promises to Jiah Khan, drove her to commit suicide: CBI chargesheet

Mumbai:MMNN:12 Dec. 2015
Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi made false promises to his girlfriend, model-actress Jiah Khan, and drove her to commit suicide in 2013, CBI has said in its chargesheet even as a Court here reprimanded the agency for leaking parts of the document to media.
"Investigations revealed that the note written by the deceased (Jiah) establishes that Sooraj ruined her life," said the charge sheet, filed in a Special Court two days ago.
The false promise given by Sooraj to Jiah in the note (suicide note), that "you promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged" made her emotionally attached to the 25-year-old actor, it said.
"The wilful conduct of the accused drove the accused to commit suicide," the charge sheet said, adding hence Sooraj is liable to be punished for abetting her suicide.
"Jiah and Sooraj were in contact since September 2012 through Facebook, and used to stay together till her death (on June 3, 2013). They were also into physical relationship", it said.
The agency said handwritten notes of Jiah, which were subjected to forensic analysis, showed her mental status and circumstances and reason behind her suicide.
The CBI said the three-page suicide note was written by Jiah in which she has narrated her intimate relationship with Sooraj, the physical abuse, mental and physical torture she underwent.
"Though the note is not signed by Jiah or addressed to Sooraj, evidences on hand suggested that this incriminates Sooraj only."
Investigations have brought out that Jiah used to clean Sooraj's room, iron his clothes and stack them in a cupboard. She also bought decorative articles for Sooraj's flat and presented gifts to him.
The agency accused Sooraj of giving incomplete and fabricated statements on relevant issues. "They indicated he is concealing relevant information about the actual reason behind the incident," the charge sheet said.
"On the basis of forensic psychological assessment and behavioural analysis interview, it may be inferred that Sooraj is hiding some relevant information related to death/suicide of Jiah and did not want to disclose some content of last argument with her that may be a cause of her death."
No unknown person or any suspicious person was captured on CCTV footage obtained from the actor's building on the day of the incident, it said.
In the charge sheet, the CBI said in November 2012 Jiah informed Sooraj she has got injured and needed medication. He arranged Dr Anand Pal for treatment.
"Pal treated for the cut injury on her left hand and confirmed that this injury was a self inflicted one by Jiah."
The document also said Dr Rahul Datta treated Jiah for mental stress when she was in relationship with Jaydeep, her secretary.
"On December, 2, 2012, she was treated (again) by Dr Datta for the same problem but this time she did not disclose anybody's name for her stress and depression."
In January 2013, Sooraj and Jiah went to a hospital after she complained of stomach pain. She underwent some tests and reports confirmed she was pregnant.
"In the same month Jiah and Sooraj contacted Dr Datta to take advice for aborting pregnancy. Dr Datta prescribed some tables and after consuming it she started bleeding continuously," the charge sheet said.
Dr Datta later referred her to Dr Sejal Desai who executed a patient agreement form for medical abortion.
"After two days (around January 19, 2013) Dr Datta received a call from Sooraj, saying Jiah was sitting on the pot and half the stuff (foetus) was stuck inside. Dr Datta advised him to take her to the nearby hospital," it said.
Later again Sooraj called Dr Datta and said he helped her pull out the 'remaining stuff' (foetus).
The fact, the CBI said, was written by Jiah in her note saying, "I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave you myself completely. The pain you have caused me every day has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul and I aborted our baby and it hurt me deeply."
On January 27, 2013, when she got a call from one Maneka Harsingani to collect costumes, Jiah told her she was having sever cramps on her leg. "When Harsingani asked Jiah about Sooraj, she said he left the place on seeing the suffering and pain," the CBI document said.
When Harsingani reached Jiah's place, she saw Sooraj and his servant present in the building premises with his car. Sooraj was helping Jiah sit in the car and the starlet was repeatedly saying 'I am sorry'.
"Harsingani stated that once she went to Jiah's house for dressing her up for some programme, she saw some injury marks on her neck and shoulders. When asked, the starlet said they were the marks of beating by Sooraj."
CBI said Jiah went to London in February 2013, and told her mother Rabiya about Sooraj. "Rabiya tried to convince her to keep away from Sooraj as he was concentrating on his (acting) career and was not suitable for Jiah. But Jiah tried to convince her mother showing messages sent by Sooraj that he was very caring while she was in Mumbai."
The document said after Jiah's return to Mumbai she told Sooraj her mother was not happy with their relationship. On April l3, 2013 when Rabiya came to Mumbai, Sooraj took her and Jiah to a hotel. In the hotel, the actor told Rabiya he was deeply in love with her daughter and wanted to marry her.
"Rabiya advised them to get engaged and when she asked Sooraj about his parents, he said his father (actor Aditya Pancholi) does not care about him and he was staying separately."
The charge sheet said on May 18, 2013, Jiah missed her plane. Later Sooraj came to Rabiya's residence and informed her about it and also said she was at his flat.
"Rabiya told Sooraj there was no problem as they liked each other. But Sooraj informed her Jiah was under depression as she had no work (film) and also said that due to depression once she tried to commit suicide by cutting her wrist. He told Rabiya he wants some space between him and Jiah as he is going to start his career."
A day before her suicide, Jiah told her mother a producer has selected her for a role in a Telugu movie. On the night of June 2, 2013 (a day before suicide), she received a bouquet from Sooraj for getting the role. Jiah thanked Sooraj but asked her watchman to throw the bouquet in the dustbin.
The charge sheet said some witnesses heard Jiah and Sooraj talking in a very angry manner that night. The next day Rabiya found Jiah hanging from the ceiling.
Meanwhile, the Special Women's Court today took cognisance of the charge sheet filed by CBI on December 9.
However, the Court rapped the Central agency for leaking to the media parts of the charge sheet. "How come the contents of the charge sheet is known to media even before I got to know about it," Judge A S Shende said.
"CBI is the only source from where it got leaked. This is a very serious thing. Be careful about it in future," she warned and later adjourned the matter till January 18.
Sooraj appeared before the court and collected a copy of the charge sheet.
Meanwhile, outside the court, Jiah's mother Rabiya told reporters he was not satisfied with the CBI charge sheet. "I am not happy with the chargesheet, there is much more to be revealed."
Jiah, an American citizen, was found dead at her Juhu home here on June 3, 2013. Police later arrested Sooraj on the basis of a six-page letter, purportedly written by the Bollywood starlet, and booked him for 'abetment of suicide'.
According to police, Jiah (25) was in a relationship with Sooraj, who was then trying to make a foothold in Bollywood, and made his screen debut with "Hero", which hit the theatres in September this year.
The Bombay High Court had subsequently granted bail to Sooraj. His bail application contended that the two were in a consensual relationship, and the letter was being misused by Jiah's mother.
In October 2013, Rabiya moved the High Court alleging that her daughter had been murdered and sought a CBI probe.
The suburban Juhu Police on January 16, 2014, filed a 447-page chargesheet in Andheri Magistrate's Court. The case was transferred to CBI in July 2014.
